Two elements of Baranda's background are of particular interest:
His family were militant members of
the Popular Socialist Party (Partido Socialista Popular - PSP),
the former Communist Party in Cuba. He was one of many cadres who
were instructed to enlist in the rebel army in the second half of
1958 and, specifically, to join the Second Eastern Front
"Frank Pais" under the leadership of Raúl Castro.
Baranda saw little action, being assigned mostly to political
endeavors at the Tumbasiete school of politics that operated in the
mountains under the guidance of Sidroc Ramos, a communist
intellectual and noncombatant captain appointed by Raúl Castro.
Baranda became a pilot and was promoted because of his association
with Raúl Castro and his contacts in the PSP. Ladislao as
well as many former members of the old PSP favored Perestroika in
the Soviet Union.
Ladislao Baranda and those of his
generation are not considered "historicos"; they are not
close to the inner circle of nor to political figures but have one
essential asset; they are closely associated with Raúl Castro and
protected by him.
